Sandoll Inc. (CEO Young-ho Yun), a leading content creator platform company, announced on the th that it has completed the development of IBM Plex Sans Traditional Chinese (IBM Plex Sans TC) and Simplified Chinese (IBM Plex Sans SC) in collaboration with global IT company IBM.
The IBM Plex Sans font series is a multilingual font project initiated by IBM in 2017. Released under the Open Font License (OFL), the series aims to provide a consistent typographic experience across various language environments. It includes multiple languages such as Latin, Korean, Japanese, and Chinese, with Sandoll responsible for developing the CJK (Chinese, Japanese, Korean) fonts. Through this project, Sandoll has reaffirmed its competitiveness in the global font market by directly developing not only Korean fonts but also Japanese and Chinese fonts.
Sandoll began developing IBM Plex Sans CJK in 2018, investing approximately seven years into its continuous improvement. The project incorporated significant effort and research to ensure the design characteristics of Latin fonts were consistently applied to Korean, Chinese, and Japanese scripts.
The newly released IBM Plex Sans TC (Traditional Chinese) and IBM Plex Sans SC (Simplified Chinese) were designed to align with IBM’s design philosophy while optimizing the structure and readability of Chinese characters.
A key focus was enhancing readability in digital environments while preserving the unique characteristics of each language. The Chinese fonts maintain the clarity and harmonious design principles of the IBM Plex Sans series while respecting the inherent structure and stroke order of Chinese characters.
Extensive fine-tuning was carried out to ensure harmony between different languages, reflecting IBM’s global design philosophy. The Chinese fonts were designed to balance well with Latin, Korean, and Japanese fonts while maintaining the distinct features of each language, reinforcing IBM’s brand identity. Stroke thickness and proportions were carefully adjusted to create visual consistency across different scripts.
Sandoll previously developed IBM Plex Sans KR (released in 2020) and IBM Plex Sans JP (released in 2021). The specifications of IBM Plex Sans JP are set to expand by mid-2025, with continuous upgrades planned to enhance user experience.
Beyond the IBM Plex Sans project, Sandoll is collaborating with various global companies to develop CJK fonts. Sandoll's ability to produce comprehensive CJK fonts, along with its industry-leading hinting technology, makes it a preferred partner for international enterprises. By working with Sandoll, companies can develop Korean, Japanese, and Chinese fonts simultaneously, ensuring optimal readability and typographic consistency. Furthermore, ongoing language expansion and technical support are easily managed, increasing the demand for Sandoll’s expertise.
Developing CJK fonts as a unified process allows companies to maintain design consistency, effectively reinforcing brand identity. This approach is also more efficient than developing individual languages separately, saving both time and costs. Additionally, the integrated development model streamlines communication and project management, facilitating a smoother workflow. The advantages of this approach extend to future language expansions as well.
A Sandoll representative stated, “Sandoll possesses the capability to develop not only CJK fonts but also Western scripts such as Latin and Cyrillic. We will continue investing in research and development and collaborating with global companies to establish ourselves as a world-class font company.”
Founded in 1984, Sandoll is a leading South Korean font company that has developed fonts for global corporations and possesses world-class font development and service capabilities. It has created key fonts such as Microsoft Office’s default Korean font ‘Malgun Gothic,’ Google and Adobe’s collaborative fonts ‘Noto Sans’ and ‘Noto Serif,’ and Apple’s system font ‘Apple SD Sandoll Gothic Neo.’ Additionally, Sandoll has designed exclusive corporate fonts for Samsung, LG, Hyundai, and other global enterprises, earning recognition for its top-tier font technology.
