Sandoll, a creator content platform led by CEO Young-ho Yun, has announced the release of a report detailing the utilization of its "SandollCloud Font Safety School."
Since February 2016, Sandoll has been pioneering the provision of its SandollCloud service free of charge to elementary, middle, and high schools nationwide, aiming to promote safe font usage and foster the development of Korean language culture. This initiative, known as the "Font Support Project," was the first of its kind in the industry. To further expand its support efforts, Sandoll expanded its existing font support project into the "SandollCloud Font Safety School" campaign in 2019. Under this program, Sandoll provides over 760 fonts (as of April 2023, with monthly updates) free of charge, enabling schools to use Korean fonts without concerns about copyright issues.
The recently published report on the utilization of the SandollCloud Font Safety School covers the period from June 2020 to February 2023. It analyzes the usage trends of schools and students who have safely utilized fonts through the SandollCloud Font Safety School, protecting them from potential font copyright disputes.
In 2022, the number of applications for the SandollCloud Font Safety School surged to over 25,000, marking a more than 4.2-fold increase compared to 2020. Furthermore, the cumulative number of applications surpassed 61,000 as of February 2023. When converted into time (with each application granting a usage period of 365 days), this translates to approximately 537 million hours. This time represents the protection afforded to students and teachers from potential font copyright lawsuits resulting from unauthorized or unverified font usage.
The rapid increase in applications for the SandollCloud Font Safety School can be attributed to Sandoll being the only provider in the industry to offer the largest variety of fonts (over 760) for font support. All fonts provided by Sandoll are commercially available, and the cumulative application count, when converted into monetary value (based on Sandoll Life subscription fee of KRW 478,800 per application), amounts to approximately KRW 294 billion. Additionally, the convenience of the cloud-based font technology, which allows users to access fonts via the "Cloud Bridge" application without the need to install font files on their PCs, has contributed to the popularity of the service.
Examining the utilization rates of the SandollCloud Font Safety School, it was found that 61% of applications came from high schools, followed by 23% from elementary schools, 10% from middle schools, and 6% from other institutions such as teacher communities and special education schools. The high utilization rate among high schools can be attributed to the frequent use of the SandollCloud service in specialized high schools and design schools for assignments and classwork.
The utilization rates of teachers and students varied across elementary, middle, and high schools. Among teachers, elementary school teachers had the highest utilization rate at 44%, followed by high school teachers at 35%, middle school teachers at 12%, and other institutions (teacher communities and special education schools) at 9%. Among students, high school students had the highest utilization rate at 87%, followed by middle school students at 7%, and other institutions (teacher communities and special education schools) at 3%. Elementary school students had the lowest utilization rate at 2%.
The peak periods for applying to the SandollCloud Font Safety School were the fourth quarter, accounting for 60% of applications, followed by the second quarter (19%), first quarter (15%), and third quarter (6%). Applications primarily occurred during the fourth and second quarters when the academic semesters began, but significant numbers were also observed during the first and third quarters, even during vacation periods, indicating the use of the service for various content creation tasks, including assignments, advertisements, and merchandise design.
As the popularity of the SandollCloud Font Safety School grows, the coverage area for applications has expanded. In 2020, applications were mainly from seven regions, including Seoul, Gyeonggi, Busan, Gangwon, Jeollabuk, and Jeollanam. However, by 2022, applications were received from 17 regions nationwide, including Seoul, Gyeonggi, Chungcheong, Ulsan, Jeju, and others.
Currently, the SandollCloud Font Safety School is accessible to teachers and students at elementary, middle, and high schools through the SandollCloud website, allowing immediate access upon application.
A spokesperson for Sandoll expressed satisfaction with the positive response from teachers and students, stating, "We are pleased to see that many teachers and students have embraced our initiative to provide fonts free of charge to schools, thereby transforming the perception of font usage in education and achieving such remarkable results. Sandoll will continue to engage in various support activities to create an environment where everyone can safely and freely access and use beautiful Korean fonts without concerns about copyright issues."
In addition to the "SandollCloud Font Safety School" for elementary, middle, and high schools, Sandoll has initiated various font support projects targeting university students nationwide, such as the "SandollCloud Can(Can)vas Campaign" and "Startup Font Free Support Project," as well as font support initiatives for webtoon artists and other diverse creator groups, leading the way in expanding safe and convenient font usage experiences for various users.
